Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Theif
If this series had been around when I was 9 or 10, it very well may have been my favorite.
Sammy is a girl and she solves a mystery. The story is quick, not too scary, and the characters are likable. Of course as a grown-up, there are lots of things I would have liked to have seen developed more, but I guess that's why there is a whole series.
I hope I can convince my boys to at least give this one a shot. There's a good chance I'll check out more of these when I need a little break. (Like after reading Dickens!)

Please forgive me for talking about another book on the "Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Theif" post. :) But I just had to say that I was totally surprised to see my husband come home from the library with the book "Curse of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz". Russ doesn't read most blogs unless I want to show him a particular post. I asked him if he had read your post on this book, and he said,"no." I think he liked it and is ready to check out the others. Just thought it was so interesting that he picked one of your picks. :) He really should start reading your blog as he is an avid reader. Actually, we both are.
